Addinex Technologies Awarded $296K Grant from the NIH
to Reduce Opioid Use by Discharged Emergency Department Patients

Brown Emergency Medicine and Lifespan Hospital will conduct a study using the Addinex system
to remotely monitor pain and medication use by adults and children with extremity fractures.

NEW YORK, NY, September 5, 2024Addinex Technologies, Inc., a healthcare technology company focused on the innovation of remote medication management, has been awarded a $296K Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), an affiliate of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The grant will help fund the adaptation of Addinex’s medication control, monitoring, and disposal system for commercialization in a hospital setting and a study with Brown Emergency Medicine and Lifespan Hospital of adult and pediatric ambulatory patients being discharged after treatment for bone fractures. Addinex will also partner with Lifespan’s innovative Meds-to-Beds program. This intervention is designed to reduce misuse and diversion of post-surgical opioids by controlling access, providing clinician-derived automated feedback, and promoting disposal of unused pills without compromising pain control.

"8.6 million people ages 12 and older misused pain relievers in the past year while 39.1 percent of people who misused pain relievers obtained them from a friend or relative," stated Jay Schiff, Co-Founder and CEO of Addinex Technologies, Inc. "Our patented, low-cost medication dispensing system has shown the ability to reduce opioid use, refills, and excess pill retention in prior studies with cancer patients and now seeks to test our system for non-scheduled procedures and with children. We look forward to working with Brown and Lifespan to implement our system in their emergency department."
